HRRA BOATHOUSE GREEN INITIATIVES
The Hudson River Rowing Association is committed to taking a pro-active role in becoming environmentally neutral, raising environmental awareness among our members and tenants and implementing environmentally friendly procedures at our boathouse. We want to responsibly improve the way we operate and we are committed to providing the framework for all users of the HRRA boathouse to support that goal.
REUSE
We encourage and promote the use of reusable water bottles by all coaches, rowers and guests of the boathouse.
RECYCLE
We have added a recycling container to reduce the garbage we send to landfills. This is a single stream recycling bin and all paper products, cardboard, plastic, glass and metal can be recycled.
HRRA will provide two recycle bins in each bay - one large bin for bottles and cans and a small square one for paper, cardboard, metal and other rowing related recyclables.
Teams that wish to redeem the bottles collected in the bay they lease for the deposits are free to do so before the bins are emptied, otherwise the bottles will be put in the locked recycling container for pick up once a week.
WHAT WE ASK EACH BOATHOUSE TEAM TO DO:
1. Provide reusable water bottles to each member of your team or sell them as part of a fundraiser. Encourage the use of reusable bottles as the first step in reducing our impact on the environment.
2. Recruit one or more athletes, parents and coaches to empty the recycling bins and/or return any bottles on a weekly basis.
3. Empty your trash regularly so the recycling bins are not used for trash.
4. Promote these initiatives and educate your membership to build a habit of reuse and recycling.
AT REGATTAS
Participating teams will be given 4 clear trash bags to put recyclables in and asked to place the full bags outside the recycling container after they are done cleaning up.

5 Important Reasons Why the Rowing Community Should Recycle:
Saves Natural Resources - By making products from recycled materials instead of virgin materials, we conserve land and reduce the need to drill for oil and dig for minerals.
Saves Energy - It usually takes less energy to make recycled products; recycled aluminum, for example, takes 95% less energy than new aluminum.
Saves Clean Air and Water - In most cases, making products from recycled materials creates less air pollution and water pollution than making products from virgin materials.
Saves Landfill Space - When the materials that you recycle go into new products, they don't go into landfills or incinerators, so landfill space is conserved.
Saves Money and Creates Jobs - The recycling process creates far more jobs than landfills or incinerators, and recycling can frequently be the least expensive waste management method for cities and towns.
