2010 HRRA SCULLING

LEARN-TO-SCULL
As with all of our novice programs, HRRA uses a progressive curriculum to develop the skills of a sculler. We believe the methodical, supervised layering of rowing skills is critical to anyone’s success, therefore, we don’t just put you in a single a few times and then send you along your way, we are with you throughout the entire process, ensuring that you are ready for the next level before you take that leap into a smaller shell or going out on your own.

Learn-to-Scull instructs a small group of rowers, first in quads, then in doubles and finally in singles over 8 outings in a two week period. Only once you have mastered the base level of skills are you moved to the smaller boats and eventually allowed to row in a single on your own. The timeline to independence is unique for each athlete and upon graduation of Learn-to-Scull you will be directed to the appropriate program and boat type for your skill level.

HUDSON RIVER INDEPENDENT SCULLERS
An Independent Sculler is a rower who has acquired all of the skills to row unsupervised on the Hudson, either through the HRRA Learn-to-Scull curriculum or by passing a certification test. A rower can be certified to row unsupervised in a variety of shells and may update their certifications as their skills improve. There is no coaching for independent scullers, but Independent Scullers can supplement their solo outings through the coached sculling program.

The HRRA Boathouse has the capacity to store 48 singles and doubles and HRRA owns and rents a variety of singles and doubles for HRRA members to learn and row in. Some HRRA members choose to purchase singles or doubles for their personal use and HRRA rents racks in our boathouse for their storage as well.

HRRA Independent Scullers, with or without rack rental, enjoy the lowest rates in the region for sculling access to the river, not to mention full HRRA membership benefits and participation in the largest rowing community in the Mid-Hudson region! HRRA Independent Scullers are welcome to participate on any of the sweep teams as a substitute for a missing sweep rower or join the Junior Sweeps or Masters B team when the water is too rough to go out in a small shell. If an HRRA Independent Sculler would like to row as an official team member on the Junior/Open Advanced or Masters A teams there is a 30% discount off of the program fee.

PRIVATE RACK WAITING LIST
If you have a boat or intend to buy a small shell for personal use and want to store it in the HRRA Boathouse you will need to fill out the Private Rack Wait List form and return to the address below.

Individuals on the list will be notified when a rack is available and they will have up to 4 weeks to fill the rack with a boat or their spot will be offered to the next person on the list.

PRIVATE RACK RENTAL
HRRA rents racks for singles and doubles to individuals and clubs. The 2010 fee for all small shell racks is $350 regardless of club affiliation. All racks are leased directly through HRRA and no other club or lessee may sublet the rack. All private rack lessees are required to become a member of an approved resident club for an additional fee. HRRA's 2010 membership fee for rack lessees is $125. REGISTER

RACK ASSIGNMENTS
Racks for personal shells in the HRRA Boathouse are assigned on a yearly basis according to a criteria that includes frequency of use, boathouse service and seniority. New rack assignments will go into effect in the March of the following year.

LOG BOOK
All Independent Scullers sculling out of the HRRA Boathouse without a coach or launch must sign in and out of the main log book in the HRRA Boathouse lobby. If you rent a rack for your personal shell you are required to sign in and out of this logbook regardless of coach/launch escort in order for HRRA to keep a record of outings that determine annual rack assignments. This will be the only log book HRRA uses to keep track of outings for privately owned shells and their owner's activities.
